JACOB SIGRIST

Jacob Sigrist - lived and is buried in Farmer's Valley -- Hamilton County.

Jacob Sigrist was born in Switzerland February 6, 1825.  He died June 22, 1896 in Farmer's Valley.  He married Verena Steinmann who was born April 01, 1827.  They were married May 5, 1844, in Glarus, Switzerland, and came to America, New Glarus, Wisconsin, Green County, in 1847.  They moved to Illinois, Mason County in 1865, and finally to Farmer's Valley, Hamilton County, Nebraska, in the spring of 1870.  They are both buried at Farmer's Valley.  They had 11 children.  Several of their children are buried in Farmer's Valley.  Rose, who married Julius Klinkhardt, Rose was born in 1859 and died in 1943.  Fred Sigrist was born in 1854 and died in 1907, and Fannie, who married John W. Standley.  She was born 7-07-1851 and died 8-28-1903.  Daughter, Mary who married Fred Hunnell, and I believe all the Hunnells are buried in F. V. There were also two babies buried with them, but the stones just say "baby".  Their other children are not buried there that I know of, but it is possible, if so, they weren't buried in the Sigrist Plot.

One of their sons, Johann or John Jacob was my great grandfather.  According to the research from Landes Archives in Switzerland, he was born May 03, 1849, and died Dec. 16, 1907.  He is buried in the protestant cemetery in Sutton.  These do not match the gravestones, but I believe mine to be correct, coming from Switzerland "vital statistics.  The stones in Sutton some years ago, apparently were crumbling and new stones were made.  I was told they were so faded they couldn't read the dates very well, and apparently no records were available from that long ago.  Jacob, as he was known by, married Mary Tyler of Illinois.  She was born Aug. 03, 1856, and died April 10, 1939.  Mary remarried Thomas Longstreth after the death of Jacob, and he is buried along side Jacob and Mary.  He fought in the Civil War as indicated by the military marker on his grave.  I notice that there are other Longstreths buried in the Sutton Cemetery, but I have no idea if they are related to Thomas.  Rather a different English name, and I would suspect they might be related, but no proof.

Mary and Jacob had two sons, Jacob C. who is buried in Oregon.  He was a conductor on the railroad.  His brother, Walter Ray, was my grandfather.  He was always known as Ray in the Stockton, Sutton communities.  Walter Ray was born 7-13-1884 and died 7-22-1955.  He married Anna Cecilia Peterson, who was born on April 23, 1884 and died on May 16, 1974.  As you noted to me, they are buried in the Saronville Cemetery.

Walter Ray and Anna had only one child, my father, Duain Theodore, who was born Nov. 22, 1907.  His birth certificate says he was born on November 25th, but he was always told he was born on the 22nd.  His birth certificate indicates there was a fire and many certificates were burned, and both my mother and fathers are "not the originals," but the ones the state gave them from records and may not be totally accurate.  He married Eileen Joyce on Dec. 30, 1931. They were married 68 1/2 years.  Eileen was born on May 23, 1908, on the Joyce farm east of Harvard, and died on Dec. 30,  2000, (their 69th wedding anniversary.)  Duain died on June 30, 2000.  They are buried in the Harvard Cemetery in the Joyce plot.
