South Inland Cemetery Association History

The first survey and plat was made November 13, 1891 by Mr. E. G. Groff, Clay County Surveyor.

The cemetery was taken over by the U.S. Navy in 1941, at the beginning of World War II.  board members at the time were David Stimbert, Pete Stimbert, and Fred Walthers.  In about 1967, the Navy sold the surrounding land to a Mr. LeRoy Thom, including the cemetery and roads.

A preliminary meeting was held April 13, 1969 at the Senior Center, Good Samaritan Village, Hastings, Nebraska.  Thirty five (35) signed the membership list.  At this meeting, plans were made and suggestions for a legal meeting to be held May 4, 1969.  A clean-up day was held April 19, 1969.  About 15 folks showed up and a perfect clean-up was made.

On May 4, the legal meeting was held at the Senior Center, Good Samaritan Village, Hastings, Nebraska.  Twenty five (25) were present.  Minutes of the above meeting were written here-in and also a copy filed with the Articles of Organization.

On May 14, 1969, executed by Alfred Blessing and signed by LeRoy W. Thom and Jean E. Thom, a quit deed was delivered to Carl T. Stimbert on payment of One Dollar.  Same was filed in the office of the Clay County Clerk on May 21, 1969.  On May 29, 1969, the Articles of Organization with the minutes of the meeting held on May 4, 1969 were filed with the Clay County Clerk.  On the same date, the affidavit by Carl T. Stimbert ("that proper notice of a meeting to be held on May 4, 1969 had been posted in three (3) prominent places in the Township") was filed with the Clay County Clerk.

A record located by Mr. Flesner of Glenvil noted that the Evangelical German Church was dedicated in February 1880, and that the Land was donated by Benedict Stimbert.

A vital interest for the record is the events and transaction pertaining to the cemetery plat from the taking over by the navy in 1941, to the present time, 1971, April 17th.  Starting to put up a new fence April 16, 1971.  First deed for the cemetery was May 4, 1969, cemetery only: 162 ft. by 180 ft. (center of road).  Second (deed) was cemetery and church yard, March 26, 1971:  337 ft. by 180 ft. (center of road).  Price for cemetery was $1.  For the church yard:  $250 per acre for 3/4 acre - $187.50  Blessing (attorney) for executing deed:  $25.

Apparently a difference in distance from West to East of 7 ft.:  330 ft. to 337 ft.  This may have come about when the Navy rebuilt the old fence and moved it father east from the original line.  When the new fence was put up, the West side of the cemetery line was moved west 7 ft. to have more space between the graves and the fence.

Total cost for the new fence (with 2 gates) was:

south and west: $481.12 (pd. March 15, 1971)

north and east:  $390.84  (pd March 16, 1971)

Price included installation.  Frederick Drumond was the contractor.

Recorded by Carl T. Stimbert
