Fairfield News-Herald May 5, 1899 pg 5 Claude Alfred, son of D. A. and Sara A Smith, was born at Malta, Illinois, Sept 12, 1881, and died at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lincoln, Nebr., April 24, 1899. Claude had been a constant sufferer for several years and a few days before his death was taken to the hospital for examination. Under the X ray his suffering was found to be caused by a cyst tumor on the brain. This being removed he found immediate relief; but his long illness had so far destroyed his vitality, that he had not strength with which to meet the reaction. In all his sufferings even to the last, he was very brave and patient. When the end came it was as when one drops off into a peaceful sleep. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Geo H. Hull. Following is a poem written by Lewis Worthington Smith, a brother of the deceased. Note: poem not included.
