Death of Jas H. Helton - January 8 1897 Vol VI #2, Fairfield News-Herald, pg 4

On Monday afternoon the people of Fairfield were greatly shocked by the report that was quickly circulated throughout the town that Mr. Helton was dead-died suddenly. Mr. Helton had been about town all the forenoon attending to his usual business, and in his ordinary health. About half past twelve he left the store for his home, and had merely gotten inside the house when he was overcome and dropped to the floor and immediately expired. He was troubled with heart failure for many years and that was presumably aggravated at this time by the strong wind which he faced while going home. What makes this even more sad is the fact that less than three weeks ago he returned from Indiana with the body of his wife who had just died there. The family and friends have the deepest sympathy of all in this their double bereavement.

Mr. Helton was an old soldier, but was not a member of the Post, only a few hours before his death he filled out an application and handed it to Ms Massie to be presented to the Post on Tuesday at their regular monthly meeting, but ere this was done he joined the great army above.

The funeral services took place Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the M E church conducted by Rev. G A Hobson, after which his remains were taken to the Fairfield cemetery and placed beside that of his wife.
